We Must Have Clean Pillows in Accommodation!

A very important Hotel bed product (the Pillow) which touches the face, is and should be of No 1 concern to all guests staying in Accommodation.

In the past, Hotels worldwide have claimed that Pillow cleanliness and hygiene in this very important guest safe area have always been addressed, but that has not been correct. Even the most stringently careful Hotel operators have not looked close enough at PILLOW HYGIENE. Just replacing clean Pillowcases or occasionally laundering an absorbent quilted Pillow Protector between each guest, is not the answer to keeping a Pillow 100% clean.

THE SOILED HOTEL PILLOW

Along with the excessively sweating guest which has always been a problem for Accommodation providers, the issue of guests now coughing or sneezing into a Hotel Pillow, has taken the need for cleanliness and guest safety to a new level.

Gone are the days of housekeeping staff just replacing the Pillowcases on a guest bed with an occasional launder of the absorbent quilted Pillow Protector. Not all Fitted Sheets are the same

As leading Australian suppliers and manufacturers of Hotel Bed Linen and Bed coverings for over 40 years, HotelHome know the ins and outs of proper Hotel bed linen and we know it better than most.

HotelHome have been supplying true commercial quality sheets to the Hotel, Luxury Accommodation including Trains and Airlines as well as many of Australia’s leading Interior Designers on their client’s behalf for many years now.

What makes a Fitted Sheet so much different to the other bed linen components on the bed?

To put it simply, it is the work horse!

It does a totally different function to a flat sheet , and it needs special heavier yarn specifications in the fabric, the colour, the elastic, the sizing and especially the ease of fitting to a mattress. These specifications add to the perfect performance, comfort, and longevity of a SOHO Fitted Sheet.

Like a good pair of jeans

The Fitted Sheet is like a favourite pair of jeans, it needs to have the correct fit whilst also being the work horse that will easily wash and go back onto the bed. Just like your favourite Jeans can be worn year after year with a stylish shirt/blouse of any texture / colour, or a casual polo shirt, the jeans do all the work, and it is most important they always fit perfectly, look good and feel good. A Fitted Sheet should do the same function on a bed, and it should always be WHITE!

Why White in colour?

The Fitted Sheet is more likely to absorb sweat, soiling and all sorts of spillages that may happen, so being white in colour means it can be bleached at any time if required. Another reason is that the heavier Hotel sheet construction required for a good quality fitted sheet is always produced in WHITE so that it does not lose strength from the dyeing process. It could be produced in colours, but it is not required.

Why do we have printed and coloured or jacquard stripe sheets on a fitted bottom sheet, when they are not the correct product to be using?

Because the fitted Sheet performs a different function to other “Top of Bed” sheets and decorative bed products, it should not form part of a matching set of sheets as seen in retail.

The Soho fitted sheet is available in white to also ensure it can handle a proper commercial hygiene wash and it is the sheet that will easily co-ordinate back with all of your favourite flat sheet, pillowcases and quilt covers.

No matter if you prefer your flat sheet and pillowcases to be an Organic Cotton, Linen, Egyptian Cotton Sateen or Silk – Soho is the basic that will always work and not draw too much attention on a dressed bed.

On most well-dressed beds, the WHITE fitted sheet is normally only seen by the end user.

Why are some Fitted Sheets far too tight?

Retail fitted sheets are made to fit most mattresses far too tight, saving on fabric usage and using a light domestic elastic which will only last for a shorter period if the product is properly laundered, especially when a hygiene launder is required. Many of these retail fitted sheets are just made to meet a price point.

A good quality fitted sheet should have all the following characteristics:

Fits perfectly
Easy to fit and remove
Proper heavy duty elastic
An extended lifetime
Correct fabric - A substantial weight cotton polyester sheeting of 160gsm that has a nice crisp feel to lay upon. Just like a good Hotel.
White in colour, so that it can be processed with any bleaching cycles that may be required.
Washability - Proper Hotel sheeting is produced using fabric woven with thicker yarns so the fabric can handle the wear, continual laundering and a proper hygiene wash.

What is the difference between Hotel Quality Sheets and Sheets sold on the retail market?

Hotel quality sheets are not graded for quality in thread counts or any other retail terms used to sell to consumers. These Hotel qualities are much heavier sheeting grades in a plain weave and are normally in a cotton polyester blend that gives the strength and longevity required when a sheet needs to be constantly laundered to be 100% hygienic every time it is in use. The yarn specs are chosen to give the best performance both in overall feel and the longevity required when laundered as above and used by all types of hotel guests.

Although most Hotels do not use fitted sheets, to help share the wear with flat sheets, good quality Hotel sheets are always around 160gsm in weight and they are always white. They are not printed or dyed for obvious reasons of hygiene and to give the guest a confidence of cleanliness.

What does Thread Count mean?

Thread count is a retail terminology used in domestic bed linen in Australia since around the late 1960’s which helps determine the weight of a fabric.

A high thread count does not always guarantee a sheet will be better quality or more durable. The thread count, plus the yarn guage, determine the weight and quality of a sheeting fabric. There is also the looms the sheeting is woven on that form part of the quality answer for sheeting.

Thread count is the number of threads (vertical and horizontal) in a square of fabric. It’s usually per 10cm².

A higher thread count is achieved by using finer yarn which will usually result in a soft fabric however it is also a very delicate and not durable, especially in a Hygiene wash and everyday commercial application where constant laundering is required.

SOHO sheeting quality

SOHO is produced from a genuine Hotel quality 160gsm sheeting that is graded by grams per square metre, plus the yarn count and weaving process involved. It has nothing to do with thread count, which is the retail term for lighter weight sheetings. The proven yarn construction and ideal weight in a crisp quality Hotel White sheeting makes SOHO the perfect sheet to lay upon.

SOHO Mattress wall depths

Due to the demand of quality fitted sheets that are easy to fit and remove, HotelHome are now offering SOHO with both a 40cm and 50cm wall in most Australian bed sizes.

We find from our experience with better end Australian Mattresses that a maximum fitted wall drop of 45 to 50cm covers every depth for our clients. This maximum drop will cater for most beds including very deep walled imports, especially based on the mattress heights now used by leading Bed Manufacturers including Sealy, Tempur, AH Beard, etc is around 30cm high.

This ensures there is still sufficient tuck, even when using the HotelHome Cloud Mattress Topper on your bed.

What is the best way to use this colour combination in an accommodation environment, especially as Bed Coverings and soft furnishings:

Anchor the room - Which can be as simple as selecting a block colour for your bed head, bed base or bed valance and sofa / armchairs (i.e. a darker charcoal or paler grey or natural). Siam Charcoal or Clipper Rain are perfect examples (see below).

From there all of the other accessories in shades of citrus and grey or a 2 tone fabric design combination such as a design like Fiddlesticks below, can work around your anchor colour.

When using Grey and Charcoal tones in an accommodation room as Bed Coverings, the HotelHome design team suggest introducing co-ordinates of soft and bright citrus yellows like the Pantone colour of the year Illuminating.

Shades of Yellows from citrus through to golden sunflower combined with clean Greys through to smokey charcoals have always worked well in accommodation properties.

Selecting the Best Hotel Cushion

A genuine, carefully selected Hotel Cushion, designed, woven, and constructed in Australia for Australian Accommodation, can be a cost-effective way to impress guests and add that long term quality presentation to your rooms.

Cushions for accommodation, should be much more than just a comfort product.

Quality Cushions for a sofa and or bed, that are well chosen for your property, can be the inexpensive product that changes room presentation from bordering on boring to an overall smart quality rooms look.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

What to look for when considering Cushions for an accommodation property, whether it be for comfort on a sofa, or adding a smart new style to a bed.

Genuine Commercial Quality Fabrics – For all Bed Cover products including Cushions, it all starts using yarns with high tensile strength, designed for long term performance they must be colourfast, fire retardant if required and washable.

All HotelHome Fabrics are woven in Australia using proven, high spec’d commercial yarns in short float constructions, to ensure the fabric will not catch when guests or housekeeping are removing Cushions from the bed. Typically, hand jewellery like rings and luggage thrown on a bed or sofa, will cause these pulls that quickly shorten the life of a product.

Washability – Besides being Australian woven, the washability of fabric should be the first thing you look for when selecting Bed Covers for an accommodation property.

In a commercial accommodation environment it is an absolute necessity that all decorative Bed Coverings (including Bed Runners, Cushions etc) are easily removed from the bed and can be washed on a regular basis for appearance and hygiene. Manufacturing Quality – Whilst fabric quality/specifications are paramount in producing a Hotel Cushion, the correct heavy-duty zip, high quality sewing finish and washable commercial inner is all part of offering the correct product for accommodation. If you are installing proper commercial quality fabrics, they will last a very long time (often at least 5 times longer than a domestic version) so you want to ensure the fabric designs selected are either non dating or classic looks which will always have a touch of style and quality over a fad creation.

Avoid loose trims, buttons etc – delicate decorative finishes can look fantastic in a domestic environment where the Cushions do not need to be laundered on a regular basis and are handled with the upmost care, they are best avoided in an accommodation property.

Unnecessary buttons, fringes, loose embroidered designs, and trims are often the first little extras that can start to pull and loosen threads which will make a Cushion look shabby and unacceptable in a very short time frame.

Can you have too many cushions on the bed?

When dressing an accommodation bed, you want your guests to immediately feel that the room they are entering, and especially the bed they will be sleeping in, is clean and fresh.

Often, by having too many Cushions on a bed that are tired, shabby, have wobbly or flat inners, are too small and just look cheap & untidy, this scenario can detract from the clean and fresh look property owners and guests are seeking.

The HotelHome Cushion rule of thumb for our clients when trying to work out the best Cushion combination for their beds is:

ON LARGER BEDS

If you are working with a larger bed (i.e. King, Super King, Californian King etc) up size both your pillows to a Majestic King Pillow to emphasize comfort and in turn, up size your Cushions from a basic scatter sitting lost in the middle of the bed to 2 larger sized HotelHome Scatter Cushions. These very popular larger scatters can be either on their own or in conjunction with the Bel-air elongated Cushion laying between the wide and taller Majestic King Pillow and the larger scatter as shown below.

This simple combination of both “maximum comfort” Majestic King pillows and smartly styled Cushions, will immediately fill the bed and give the look and feel of a quality property with substantial and luxurious Hotel Beds.

ON QUEEN SIZE BEDS

For a Queen size bed, some properties still do use basic King Pillows or even Majestic King Pillows to help fill across the bed, however even if standard pillows are being used on this bed size, the best way to dress Cushions on this bed size is very similar to a King Bed, the only difference is that you can get away with just using 2 larger scatter cushions only or slightly smaller cushion sizes on a Queen sized Bed, which includes the Standard HotelHome Scatter Cushions and Breakfast Cushion or just the Breakfast Cushion only as shown below by Best Western.

ON SMALLER BEDS or 2 BEDS IN ONE ROOM

There are still many properties with more than one bed per room, and the best way to make a narrower bed still look neat, tidy, and well presented (as well as keeping the bed looking in proportion in the room), is by selecting one Cushion per bed.

An elongated Cushion such as a Bel-air Cushion for a Double or King Single Bed and a Breakfast Cushion for a Long Single or Standard Single is the most popular option. Although, if your property is using a square Cushion throughout the other rooms, one scatter (either a large scatter or a standard sized scatter) placed neatly in the middle of the bed can still offer a neat look as well as keeping things simple for housekeeping, by just running with one Cushion size only throughout the property.

With many properties now dressing their beds with a combination of full Bed Covers, including the Practical Fitted Flat Top/ Cap Top, the elongated Cushion styles including the Bel-air Cushion and Breakfast Cushions have become the finishing touch to these sleek Bed Covering styles.

THE ALL-WHITE STORY

Wash all cushion covers – this is also a good time to assess how your cushions are performing and whether the inners need to be refreshed or if the entire cushions need to be retired and replaced with brand new and fresh options ready for the warmer seasons ahead.

Get ready for the longer days and warmer nights

INSPECT

Why is a Hotel Cushion such an important product in selling Hotel room accommodation?

The BED is always the focus on any Hotel room photo shoot.

Imagine, in the middle of that Hotel bed is a very attractive Cushion display of either one or up to three Cushions, which adds real wow factor, or guest reassurance of property quality. This bed presentation immediately brings the whole room image alive whilst giving a good impression to any prospective guest via Website, Hotel advertising or just on first arrival.

Cleverly selected Hotel Cushions that look as good in the flesh as they do in a room photo shot, can form part of the process in making or breaking that important impression of a first-time guest. Equally, it can make or break the look of the Hotel bed and the ambience of the whole room.

Keep it simple

Although we think “more is more” when it comes to fabric design and colour we realise it is easy for the standard accommodation property to go over the top with too many cushions etc. So we have put together a few key pointers as a guide which we suggest to our clients to help make this selection process easy, economical and effective!

We suggest our clients try to use the one cushion size for all bed sizes, to make it quick and easy for housekeeping when dressing the beds. Most people do have their own preference when it comes to the perfect pillow, some say the softer the better where others prefer a firm pillow.
Our suggested combination includes The International 600 Pillow (Soft Pillow) and The Madison Pillow (Medium / Firm Pillow) – which offers the best of both worlds!
The International Pillow is now receiving its very own cult following as it offers A+ presentation with a Gusset (side wall) that makes it fill the pillowcase nicely and also ensures the pillow still looks good if you decide to display it upright on the bed.
The Madison Pillow is filled with 30% down and 70% small feather and includes a 100% Japara cover (no gusset). This is a medium/firm pillow as it is densely packed and keeps it shape.

What is "The Cloud" ™ Mattress Topper by HotelHome Australia?

By now many of Australia’s most discerning travellers and luxury Hotel guests have either experienced or heard of "The Cloud" ™ Mattress Topper.

"The Cloud" ™ is the genuine and original trademarked 5 star Mattress Topper by HotelHome Australia as sold to the world’s best Hotels, since 2007.

We have supplied "The Cloud" ™ to many of the 5 Star Hotels and Boutique properties across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands; for example, the Star Entertainment Group (Jupiter’s Hotel & Casino, Treasury Hotel & Casino, and The Star), Accor, Hilton, the award winning luxurious Daylesford Lake House Hotel/Spa, Byron at Byron, Lilianfels, Alto Hotel on Bourke, Halcyon House Cabarita, Hadleys Orient just to name a few.

As a true Hotel product "The Cloud" ™ is far superior to any Bed Topper type of product that is sold in retail or online stores in this country.

When developing "The Cloud" ™ we designed this product purely for a commercial application, it is not just a bed topper that has been produced to meet a retail price point.

HotelHome designed "The Cloud" Gen II especially for 5 star Hotels. The Gen II has 10% down and 90% small soft feather in each individual chamber. Down does capture a larger quantity of air and more quickly than the small soft feather, so the Gen II has an increased quantity of small soft feather to trap the correct amount of air into each specially designed chamber. This creates the sensation of lying on a cloud. The extra quantity of small feather does add extra weight to the overall product, however the result is a magnificent soft feather down bed topper at a very competitive price. The weight of the "Cloud Gen II" is over 2000 grams per square metre, because of this higher percentage of small soft feather. The Gen II is now our most popular Mattress Topper as used by Luxury Hotels.

It is important to be aware that any moisture from excess sweat or accidents will always need to be removed from this natural feather/down product and obviously it should be avoided.

Although it is not a necessity for everybody, HotelHome highly recommends using the 5 Star Hot Wash Waterproof mattress protector (Laundry Safe) with The Cloud, to keep the product dry at all times. This special protector will not detract from the feeling of The Cloud< underneath.

"The Cloud" should be taken off and aired every 6 months or so for at least a few hours and then it will not require any cleaning. If The Cloud should become soiled, it must be cleaned only by a professional and reputable dry cleaner.

To optimise the performance of the topper, the down and small soft feathers are mixed in the individual chambers. Many of the retail Bed Topper products quote high percentages of down, however they are manufactured with the down in a separate thin top layer. Unlike the lighter weight retail toppers the ‘Cloud’ toppers do not require attaching to the bed. They are weighty products and will not scrunch up or move around on the bed. "The Cloud"™ is a very large product because of the fill weight and it is similar in size to a small fridge.

Elasticised straps are really only ever required for very lightweight mattress protectors not a true Hotel Mattress Topper. Instead, "The Cloud"™ being a substantial topper can be lifted, rotated and puffed up regularly.
